did dinosaurs eat grass?
>>

the first grasses evolved during the late cretaceous period. So not all dinosaurs ate grass, though it is unlikely some dinosaurs did not eat grass.
>>
No. The emergence timeline of grass doesn't really overlap with that of the dinosaurs...grass came after the dinosaur extinction 'event'

so, which is it?
>>

grasses do first appear in the geologic record in the upper cretaceous and there are coprolites (fossilized dung) from dinosaurs that show traces of grass, thus showing that at least some dinosaurs ate some grass. But grass and other C4-plants became a dominant part of many ecosystems just after the KT-boundary in the paleogene

Not in the sense that you mean.

What sense do you think I mean?

the grasses from the late cretaceous period weren't really grasses like what we think of today. They're more akin to shoots. So, in a way, some dinos ate grass, yet at the same time, did not eat grass.

So more like eating the occasional shoot of proto-grass? Nothing close to the all-grass munchings of cows?

based on the skeletons that we put together using our assumptions of what these creatures should be shaped like, (which could be fucking wrong) it makes more sense for large herbivores to graze on things they can reach, just like modern herbivores including giraffes, rhinos, elephants and other large plant eaters.

rhinos eat twigs, fruits, and even bushes along with grass, but can we say that triceratops also reached for things based on the morphology we assume it has? It cant be said for certain, but it probably ate relatively low growing plants like cycads, if our assumptions are correct.
