Hey /sci/. I'm wonder how accurate DNA genetic testing services such as 23 and me, and DNA.ancestry are. I'm very curious about my ethnicity. Has anyone tried them? If so, which one do you recommend?

Dunno but it reminds me of assassin's creed level fuckery where they explore your genetic line to look for assassins and make video games based on your genetic memory for profit.

Its a ripoff, testing isn't reliable and even when accurate is misleading due to the gene pool being much smaller the farther back you go due to small population. They'll tell you you have traces "Germanic" dna or some shit and its not a lie but its very small and the relative is from a 1000 years ago
They use microarray to sequence certain genes/intervals that contain alot of variation based on ancestry (i.e. these genetic intervals contain lots of diversity based on where your ancestors are from due to evolutionary effects related to breeding within a certain group for a long time). Specifically what they do is look at markers that are common in different groups based on geography. The sequencing is accurate, but the results aren't necessarily accurate because our sample pool of human genomes is only like 3000 individuals.

you want our approval to give your money to scammers? Why dont you just go find an old fashioned conman in the street, empty your pockets, and he'll tell you you are descended from mao zedong and everyone else you want, and you dont even have to pee in a tube
99$ for some clowns to run an Illumina SNP array? Just wait a few years until the cost of sequencing goes down so you can get the full sequence data. Don't give these clowns money.
The only non-sucker reason to go to 23 and me is if you suspect you have a genetic disorder and want to bypass costly clinical tests. In that case, 23 and me could be more economical (they are no longer allowed to interpret your results, but they can give you a .FASTA file with the SNP info and you can figure it out for yourself.
