How did a cancer cell evolve from a dog? What the actual fuck?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canine_transmissible_venereal_tumor
>Canine transmissible venereal tumors (CTVTs)
>is a histiocytic tumor of the external genitalia of the dog and other canines, and is transmitted from animal to animal during mating.
>It is one of only four known transmissible cancers
>Although the genome of a CTVT is derived from a canid (probably a dog, wolf or coyote), it is now essentially living as a unicellular, asexually reproducing (but sexually transmitted) pathogen.

>Binomial name: Canis lupus
Wow, that just blew my mind. It is literally a dog cell that went rogue and became its own multiplying organism
almost sounds like the plot of an inspirational movie
It's not that surprising. Evolution occurs due to changes at the genetic level and cancer cells have rapid changes. Those HeLa cells taken from a cancer patient in the 50s have like 80 chromsomes. They are clearly no longer human cells.
This shit is pretty cool though and I'd love to see its role in evolution.

it happened with tasmanian devils before too

Do they really? That fucking nuts. Mrs Lacks would be proud if she was still alive

So its basically a single cell dog- subspecies?. Biology is some freaky shit
awesome topic op.
Because it was derived from a cell of a dog it is classified closely too dogs yet is unicellular, lacks mammilian phenotypes, etc.
Mind blown.
This is just another example of how "tree-like" models of evolution are limited. Forms of reticulate evolution is a very interesting process which I think needs more attention.
jesus christ stop being fucking amazed of this horrifying shit and tell me how to purge it out of existence

Fire.
