Excavation would induce a reduction in pressure and thus it would "melt" sooner, resulting in a earlier onset of cooling (relative to the surface). So yeah, dig a few k's down I guess.
Tl;dr, change the geotherm.
Or you could, I dunno, build a diamond wall. That'd just as feasible really.
