The only prominent mouth breather in my life is a guy who was in the same grade through elementary school. He seemed to be average in everything but a day ago I learned that he's now a research assistant and has worked as a data analyst for Apple.

I think it had become associated with low intelligence because:
A) retarded people (downs syndrome ex), ugly people, and dumb people are probably more likely to have health issues (some self inflicted, like smoking) and a facial structure that leads to mouth breathing
B) a hanging open mouth is associated with dumbfoundedness. It also just looks weird and dumb.
