Is there any hope for me to become a mathematician if I find math fun yet I'm bad at it?
>>
>>7957285
Yes, because you can get good with practice
>>
>>7957291
oh look this meme again
>>
>>7957297
Oh look someone who's never practiced again
>>
>>7957304
never had to
>>
>>7957306
So what was the point of
>>7957297
?

I'm about to finish up my first year of undergrad and was wondering if I should start taking more stats classes or if I should just go down the pure math route? What kinds of jobs would I be looking at for both paths? Is pure math only going to lead to academia or does it depend on what kind of stuff I focus on in grad school?
>>
>>7957314
Pure math can lead to being an actuary with a pretty high salary. But other than that not much else, afaik
>>
>>7957314
Have you learned multivariable calculus(partial derivatives and multiple integrals) as of yet? You can give mathematical statistics a shot. You can also try machine learning, which is more of a computer science thing, but it also uses statistics. Also, learn how to program. You probably can probably get a job if you focus on statistics or CS.

Also, it would be more helpful if you stated what classes you've taken. A first year might have taken the first calculus courses, which is a few classes away from actual pure math major courses, meaning abstract algebra and real analysis.
>>
>>7957314

I know a person who did the pure math thing, and is now a postdoc in geophysics. She seems to think that pure math is a good route to take if you want to do programming or data processing (although statistics is an obvious one for data processing as well).
>>
>>7957285
Yes, just be persistent as fuck. Work LOTS of problems. Don't get frustrated or give up like so many plebs do. In time you'll find yourself getting much better.
>>
>>7957285
well from your post, i think math will get less fun for you somewhere along the way to becoming a mathematician. but nothing is stopping you.
>>
>>7959472
Yeah, even if it doesn't come easily, if you or any other pleb does enough of something you'll eventually get good at it. Same with math.

It's also important to try and learn from your successes and mistakes. So once you solve a problem, ask yourself how you arrived at the correct answer and check it instead of 'Fuck, finally it's over, on to the next'

Bump desu
>>
Define "bad at it"
>>
>>7957285

Maybe. I'm excellent at stats and diff. eq but couldn't do shit in probability.
>>
>>7957297
this is like saying people only know things by being born knowing them

math is a skill which can be learned
>>
>>7957306

Then you should be a renowned mathematician by now that's won every millennium prize. Oh wait...
>>
>>7957285
You're so full of shit.

If you're bad at it you're only pretending that it's fun to buy into the "lmao I'm so nerdy xDD" culture.

You probably do this because you have no distinguishing qualities to speak of and think STEM offers you a respite. It doesn't. No one wants you fanboys here.

Are you suggesting you aren't allowed to like things unless you are exceptionally skilled at them?

>pretending that it's fun to buy into the "lmao I'm so nerdy xDD" culture.

Many people can enjoy an activity without being necessarily good at it. For some problems are fun to solve even if they are difficult.

Being a mathematician is equivalent to setting Olympic sprinting records?
>>
>>7960820

By that logic, every one of you is shit compared to Euler, et al. So quit.
>>
>>7960844
I already did desu, I majored in Japanese and now I shitpost on 4chan at my parent's basement.
>>
>>7960866

Why did you major in Japanese? You will never speak as fluently as a real Japanese person that is a scholar of the language. Should have quit!

Yes, but only for the brain instead. You're born for it or you aren't, no if's and's or but's

I didn't realize cancer could supersede such supernatural levels. The very base intuition for learning and finding passion in academia is that you initially don't understand, but have an interest - and you are therefore inclined to become better or more knowledgeable at/within the given interest.
>>
hard work and patients can mask a lack of talent
>>
>>7962401
But you know that 99% of Olympic athletes are not comparable to Bolt? Just like 99% of mathematicians aren't Gauss.

Make your minds up elitists.

what do you do with them?

Chances are if he genuinely enjoyed it, he would have spent enough time on it now to be good at it.

I've always been naturally good at math and I get my ass handed to me by kids who simply work harder.
>>
>>7963152
I have fun playing and watching football. It is a sport that I genuinely enjoy, but I'm not going to spend every day training and doing drills.
>>
>>7963152
Did you know that some people can not enjoy something as a child but then find enjoyment in it later in life?
>>
>>7962750
You aren't an aristrocrat's son living in the 16th century you moron.

You need to be genetically gifted to become an academic, or else you're going to waste years of your life to just barely get a degree and up as a barista like most people who tried before you.

Every wants to be a football start, but wanting something doesn't mean you're capable of it.
