Top kek. Also, the other anon left out Berkeley, UCLA, UChicago, UPenn, and Cornell, all of which are either better than some or all (Berkeley) of the unis you posted for MOST subjects. I literally can't express how much better my life has been since I attended Oxford. I went to a state school and gradually became the stereotypical moody, withdrawn sensitive type who both despises the quality of his immediate culture and feels a weird pride for having been raised in a sort of anti-intellectual and brutal environment. I was all set to take my Russell Group humanities BA and spend my life working as an anonymous, insecure wageslave forever thankful of being offered a job and forever too insecure to pursue my creative ambitions. The chip on my shoulder had become something of a wedge, and I felt too out of place regardless of my environment, too resentful and bitter to even attempt to make it in the artistic world. Then I finally applied for Oxford and got in to study an English MA, with reassurance that should I work hard enough a career in academia or within one of Oxford's affiliated companies would be almost guaranteed. I turned up as apprehensive as usual, and the first few days were spent regretting my decision and desperately feigning a cultured personality. But then I realized that the people there were just interesting and that the snobbery and exclusivity I had anticipated was just a myth borne out of my working class upbringing. I've since graduated, having spend the year dining in grand halls with groups of interesting people, dating several girls (one of whom, a petite Russian whose family traces back to the aristocracy, is now my fiancee). I work four days a week at a publishing company and earn £38k a year. I regularly meet up with friends from my college and visit Oxford for nights out and for meetings with my professors.

These are dumb dickwaving threads but I'll bite.
I went to a Cambridge University open day once, world's most snooty place. Everyone had this weird posh as fuck accent and the entire tour was them showing off their multi-million pound Raphael paintings. I visited Oxford as well and even they were less douchey. As for academics, sure they are top of the line but it really doesn't matter for undergraduate. I go to a no-name ex-poly. My course is certified, there are industry links for sandwich placements and I am allowed to walk on the grass.
>>7954093

>>7954088

>>7958079
South Bank University ackchually.
>Why don't you just say you didn't achieve your target grades?
I got A*AA, A* in physics. Why would I lie on an anonymous imageboard? I have no reputation to maintain here. I didn't apply to Cambridge University because I didn't like the vibe, I liked Oxford University so I applied there but didn't get in (Not because of my grades, I must have failed the interview because they wanted AAA). I got rejected by Durham university, that was for grades, apparently my GCSEs weren't good enough. I got into Warwick, Imperial and UCL, I chose UCL because Imperial looked autistic and UCL was next on the prestige list, hated UCL, it was still autistic and snooty too, full of Asians, now I'm not racist but they did not talk to anyone who wasn't also Asian. I realized that pure science sucked anyway, labs were boring, no jobs and professors were aloof and unhelpful, only cared about their research and had weird-ass attendance rules (fuck being shouted at for missing a lecture at age 19). So I left that, and been self-employed in graphic design ever since. Business is on the brink so mum suggested a secure vocational qualification just in case which is why I signed up to South Bank U to do surveying. It was recommended to me by someone I know working for Arup. Chill atmosphere, good industry links and staff actually care about undergrads. Therefore I say that top universities aren't all they are cracked up to be, it's only worth putting up with that stresspot for graduate study. For undergrad nobody gives a fuck.

It's nice that I'm in an advanced program compared to most, and the total majors barely out number the amount of professors that we have in the subject while also getting experience in research starting in our first year.
By next year, I'll be shipped to a national lab to gain onsite experience. This summer I'll have near one on one training with the Professor that I'm doing research under.

Bit late, but here I am. It's the opposite of pretentious - the department is friendly and full of incredible physicists (the guy who teaches Lagrangian was one of 3 shortlisted as director general of CERN a few years back, etc), there are enough "hard" courses for you to break your back over if you want to and if you decide you're not really interested in physics anymore, there are plenty of opportunities to use your skills elsewhere in the department.
One of my favourite anecdotes about Manchester actually involves a friend of mine, he did advanced QM in third year, decided he wanted to learn QFT, knocked on Jeff Forshaw's door and Jeff spent 3-4 hours teaching him the basics of QFT right there. That kind of stuff happens all of the time here.

maybe apply to oxford next year, they have admissions tests before interviews which means that its far more based on intelligence. for example, the Mathematics Aptitude Test we had to take is /100 and 1 mark is equivalent to 1 GSCE A*. so even if you fucked your gcses like I did, you can still get in if your actually any good at maths.
