If the earth's magnetic poles were to be stripped the theory is that the ozone layer would disappear it would cause mass extinction ass we would be more vulnerable to radiation. They also believe that this event is what killed the Neanderthals. My problem with that is that if they were killed by some extreme radioactive event wouldn't there be immense amounts or signs of radiation detected in the fossils of most Ice age animals?

It's something that would appear in ice core samples. As far as I know we've yet to get ice samples that old.
How the hell is the creation of ozone in the upper atmosphere dependent on the earth's magnetic field?

None of these statements are accurate. Where are you getting your info?
If the magnetic field goes away for a while, cancer rates will go up. That's it. No mass extinction. We are already IN a mass extinction event, however...

That's some of the gist of the article as well as what my teacher was talking about
Would you care to elaborate on the last
statement?
>>7951904
He's talking about how moving species around, overhunting, and destroying habitats has, in the last few thousand years, caused very many extinctions.
Weren't the Neanderthals outbred or something anyways?
>>7951927
Presumably. Homo Sapiens Sapiens was in the region at the time.
>>7951941
Do you think we'll be killed by homo sapiens sapiens sapiens?

The field does not create ozone, that is rather obviously a different process. The field does however protect the atmosphere and the ozone that is there. Ref. Mars.
>>7951826
Earth's magnetic field shields the planet from solar wind, allowing for the ozone layer to be formed without it being blown away by solar wind.

Wrong, these are completely unrelated. Mars has no ozone layer because Mars has no oxygen in its atmosphere, and since ozone is unstable you need a constant supply of oxygen to form more ozone to replenish it.
Solar wind stripping only affects the outer layers of the atmosphere (for obvious reasons); the ozone layer is a long ways lower down, in the stratosphere.

>only affects the outer layers of the atmosphere
When the stripping continues for eons there will, in the end, be practically nothing left. For obvious reasons.
Anyway, there is in fact a little bit of ozone in Mars' atmosphere today. Moreover UV light interacting with water in the time Mars had oceans would also have provided oxygen and thus ozone. Sediments also show oxides of various minerals.

We might be killed by regular homos

Yes, and the weakened periods during Earth's pole switches don't last anywhere near as long.

Yeah but mars is tiny so it's much easier for the atmosphere to escape. It has little to do with the magnetic field.
the north and south pole reverse polarity about every 750,000 to 1 million years
When it happens we are going to get solar storms that will fry all our tech and we will see some amazing auroras all over the world. Humanity will get fucked up but we'll survive
