Description is massively misleading. The interview loads up on gross simplifications.
You do not see the single photons fired. You see the effect of a fast wavefront propagating across the objects with the reflections.
That is still rather cool.

My understanding is that it is a reflection of light, not a glowing object. In the video at t=0:58 they explain the laser is a titanium sapphire (or Ti : Al2O3) laser, which can be rather powerful.
