I'ne never really looked at what Hawking did myself but as far as I've heard his scientific contributions are a little bit overrated by more common media. He sure is a smart guy that earned his professorship and he does intresting research, but there are some people who more important like Steven Weinberg oder Ed Witten who not that famous in pop culture but more "important" in physics. Still doing serious research with his Illness is imho an impressive feat on his own.
