Why are vector fields so weird?

What this is?

Deforming a circle with a vector field.

Vector fields aren't weird at all. Algebraically they're usually fairly trivial unless we work in the complex plane.

Protip: Don't find out about this construct until it's too late, like I did:

The equations are:
x = x + 0.1*sin(y)^2
y = y + 0.1*sin(x)^2

The code itself it exceedingly simple, just run the points of a circle through a for loop and plot them after each iteration. I used Matlab for the plot, but I'm sure you could use anything to the same effect.

Are magnetic fields in physics defined as something akin to vector fields?
I don't know any physics, excuse me.

Yup.
You can look up some fluid dynamics textbook if you wish to know more.
