Your mistake is that you are only considering the downsides of intelligence. The negative effects of intelligence are actually a lot less likely to happen than the positive effects of it.
So in average, intelligence is a beneficial trait.
It's possible that this becomes less true with welfare and that intelligence has diminishing returns, but it's still a beneficial trait to have.

There are cases of depression in "gited children" but that people with high intelligence are more depressed then the average smuck is wrong. There are no statistics that back this up. There is actually research on this topic. Most of it suggests intelligence is correlated with mental disorder.

Smarter Asian countries have the highest rates of suicide than the dumber Western countries. Also, look up the "sad Socrates" effect, this is well documented.

I would argue that it isn't a good assumption to make that intelligence is correlated with socioeconomic status. Most of the richest people in the world are simply rich from inheritance. In addition, people with high IQ and Mensa members have been found to have simply "average" socio-economic status, are are most of the time underachieving what they can possibly obtain (probably due to their depression).

You can't compare country to country here, we are talking about "class" or socio ecnomic status. And those from the lower classes commit suicide at higher rates then those at the higher classes. Both Japan and Korea are famous for their high suicide rates.
