What's the worst you've ever fucked up, /sci/?
I just guillotined 6 of the wrong rats because of shitty handwriting

Like I fuck up even the most basic of things.

The first time I was doing cyclic voltammetry, I had my shit stirring for half an hour while it was running before my prof told me CV is supposed to be using diffusion-controlled redox peaks.

That's the worst I can remember, which isn't really so bad.

Nothing too serious. Once I was running the overburden porosimeter (similar to pic related but about 5 times bigger) and it has 2 pressure gauges on it, one to 2,000 PSI and the other to 10,000 for samples that need higher pressures.

The dial to switch from one pressure guage to the other is right beside the dial to wind down the pressure. I accidently grabbed the wrong one, with about 8,000 PSI in the chamber, and switched it from the 10,000 to the 2,000 gauge.

It sounded like a train whistle for a moment and the smaller gauge stopped moving. Cost about $500 to replace.

MADNESS MADE FLESH

I went to work, was told by a competent co-worker to transfer x amount of material from tank 1 and tank 3 into tank 2. He implied and I assumed tank 2 was empty.

So I started the pump, opened the valves and knowing it would be a while and being complacent and bored, I stepped out for a smoke.

Tank two was not empty.

So I ended up spilling several thousand dollars of mildly toxic chemicals into the sump and I got fired.

Oh god, that sick feeling when you build something and it works flawlessly the first time.

Electronics, coding, or mechanics, if it's a novel construction it's not supposed to work the first time. Just leaves me with a sense of forboding until it finally breaks.

At least there's always optimization.

I used a high pressure blast of DI water to rinse out a graduated cylinder that had been used for concentrated sulfuric acid. Gave me an unpleasant feeling in my throat/sinuses and had me reading MSDS sheets and freaking out for the rest of the day. I never told my boss. Fuck those little conical spouts, honestly, they are like goddamn firehoses.

Also I used some spectrophotometric grade methanol for paper chromatography because I couldn't find the regular stuff. Boss was pretty annoyed.

I'm only a sophomore in college. I'm still waiting for that first really big fuck-up.

I let 100ml evaporate in my bedroom as I slept for night
>>

I dont see the problem?
>>
I'm really not a safe person, the other week I spilled 100ml DCM and just left it to evaporate, as a kid I used to play with fire, burning lithium and various mixtures causing myself small burns every now and again, I survived a shock from a microwave transformer (never ever playing with electricity again, very luck to live through that). I once made manganese heptoxide and it exploded covering me with manganese dioxide leopard spots. I also made sulphur trioxide via the dehydration of sodium persulphate, didn't realise ozone is given off first filled bedroom with ozone, ran off and closed the door for a bit coughing. Same thing happened with HCL from a friedel crafts. I can't think of any major fuck up I've done recently though since I stopped chemistry at home and pursued it as a profession, although last year one of my lab partners spilledan entire bottle of bromine in a time cupboard, filled with brown gas and started coming out, it was quite funny watching people panic, I'm much safer than i used to be which is good because I am working with quite toxic chemicals nowadays (e.g boron trifluoride)

It was late in the evening, I'm the only one who was still in the lab because I need to fix something. At that point, the school campus is quite quiet, you barely see anyone moving around except for some stupid couples decided to make out in some dark places.
Anyway, I suddenly felt an intense urge to masturbate so I started to move to the inner room of the lab so that people can't see me do what I did even if they entered the lab. I turned off all of the lights in the lab and browse my favorite porn on my laptop. The only light that is on is from my laptop screen. Then I started to fap furiously.
Then suddenly there was someone opened the outer door of the lab. I was like shit shit fuck fuck. I got panic as the person started to move toward the inner room, where I was fapping. I didn't know what to do so I moved the chair to the other end of the room, with my back against the door so as least that person won't see my unzipped dick.
Then I heard the door opened.
"Anon? you are still here?"
It was my female colleague.
"Y-Yeah". My back is still against her.
"What are you doing at this hour?"
She moved on and see my laptop screen. Shit, I forgot to close the porn.
I finished zipping my pants but when I turn around, she didn't even look at me, I can see that she feel very awkward. Then she proceeded to grab something and move outside and left.

She never told the prof but things have been awkward between me and her now. We barely talk in the lab.

this isn't awful, just mind-numbingly stupid.
my advisor's lab contains a small lab oven that I use for drying specimens. it has a big light-up power switch on it, along with a temperature selector dial.
some undergrads in an oceanography class were using it to dry out brine samples. when they were done, for some inexplicable reason they turned the temperature knob all the way down instead of actually switching the oven off. just a little bit confused by their actions...

I fucked myself is actually what happened. I was just getting into research. My professor gave me 3 books, and a list of chapters from each to learn over the summer. I didn't even glance at those books until the beginning of the school year.

I show up fall semester, and lie saying I know them. He says that's good because he scheduled me to give a presentation on them to all the relevant people in the math department in a couple weeks.

I probably spent 12+ hours a day learning that shit, and making a presentation over the next 2.5 weeks, but I fucking got it done.

I don't have any good lab stories, but I've heard one. Idiot kid was trying to show off in uni lab once and accidentally chugged some highly concentrated HCL by switching the flask of water with the flask of HCL when his lab partner wasn't looking. I have never fucked up an instrument like this before and I'm almost done with my PhD.

I don't know if the screen didn't disengage because I didn't flip the switch or because of some instrument fault.

Luckily the photobleaching was weak enough that it could easily be background subtracted away (along with the burn mark from some retard pressing the diffraction button with the screen in too).

I felt terrible and like a complete dumbass though. Facility director said he was surprised I could burn the screen like that in such a short time. Of all the instruments to fuck up, I pick one of the most expensive ones.

I lived in a small country town

An older student had her home address on a scholarship application a few years ago, the only part I remembered was 'Railway street'

About 4 years after that I was jerking off to thoughts of her because she always wore tight jeans to class and decided to look up her address on white pages (Australian phone book online)

Anyway, I found her address, drove across town, parked down the street walked up with no shoes on, checked for motion lights, crept upto her clothes line and snatched everything from undies, bras and dresses.

Then next week in class the teacher said she had to go to the city to buy Tennis balls, but she gave up and said to the class her clothes were stolen and she needed new ones.

I felt bad, the kid they blamed was a pretty cool guy and they made jokes about him wearing the underwear. (I never wore them to school, that's retarded)

heh, I spent months jerking into them.
