Enjoy being given some code to debug and having an extra realm of possible errors to check and parse through making sure every function and method has been passed the right data type.
If you're writing a quick script it's obviously faster in R or matlab. If you're making something substantial then you'd use a real language.
Python is a useless language for academics who want to think that they're programmers.

There is a great deal wrong with R that becomes evident when you try to use it as a general purpose programming language. If you stick to what it was intended for, statistics with small datasets, it is mostly fine.
