The hologram part only means information in a volume can be thought of as mathematically equivalent to information encoded on a surface surrounding that volume. It just means that the universe can be interpreted as having volume OR as a surface, it doesn't mean the world is an "illusion". Read up on the holographic principle or Ads/CFT correspondence.
