Why do people consider physics to be such a great discipline when it's basically just pure math for people who cant do pure math? Is it because most of /sci/ is living this inadequacy and don't want to admit it to themselves?

Quite simply because it is interesting work, you get to meet interesting people, your work can have great impact and use in society at large.
Historically physics was important in developing scientific methodology, taking us from Newton's laws to Einstein's theories.
Only downside is bad pay and bad job situation but that is the norm in science. Otherwise I would still be working in research. Also it is a useful background and I don't regret doing a PhD in physics.
Pure mathematicians don't look at things like the Big Bang and particle physics though, they would rather learn about the properties of the number 28 or some shit like that

This. I got a degree in pure math and find physics tedious and often extremely confusing, and I have a friend I met in undergrad who got a degree in physics and he felt the same way about pure math. Although there have been a number of people who were gifted enough to be amazing with both disciplines, you can't look at a math problem the way you look at a physics problem and vice versa.
