>memorize this
>memorize that
>memorize

Why do people enjoy this field? I'm in Chemistry 101 and man is it bad. I hate memorization classes. Surely there is more than memorization in further Chemistry classes, right?
>>
>>7862521
You shouldn't memorize shit. You're not in college to memorize. You're in college to learn, now do that.
>>
>>7862521
This is why I hate humanities. I'm a lazy piece of shit too lazy to memorize who said what whatever years ago.

In math you just memorize a couple of rules and it's good to go.

Professor didn't tell us how to learn this. He just said memorize pic related.
>>
>>7862537
I was just being an asshole. But in all honesty you should learn why those compounds are ionized instead of just memorizing. It will help later on in stiocheometry.
>>
>>7862533

Computer Engineer. I only need Chem-101, thankfully.
>>
>memorize

Wrong way to do anything you need to actually "learn". However, it is a fucking great way for lazy profs and teaches to maintain high test scores so the university can keep putting fat people in the stadiums and taking their money.
>>
>>7862537
how do you expect to learn anything at all if you don't want to memorise the most basic shit

how else would you learn it? youtube videos? grow the fuck up, millenial
>>
>>7862521
You can probably work out a degree in chemistry if you memorize, memorize and memorize, and that is why women tend to choose chemistry instead of CS, for example. But really, if you want to solve real problems or create something new, purely mechanical memorizing does more harm than good.

I personally had the same impression of chemistry until I took an introductory in Organic chemistry. I was so impressed how logical it was that I did a full master's degree. Really, chemistry is just a flow of electrons and there are only a few basic rules you have to internalize and you are ready to play with the rules of nature. One important thing to learn in the start is that chemistry is a fuzzy discipline unlike CS or EE; most answers are not totally wrong, some answers are just better than others.
>>
>>7862609

Does one really learn anything through memorization? It's more likely that people will forget the moment the test is done. At least with Math you can memorize, but if you don't understand the concept, enjoy getting raped.
>>
>>7862537
you'll be taught why they wre named that way, probably
anyway, the names are not that difficult
>>
does anyone even consider chemistry a science lmao? The shit's probably all wrong since it's a new field, might as well call it alchemy.

I have no problem memorizing those formulas. I have a problem that there isn't any real learning and it's all memorization so far. Especially when this isn't even part of my major and just a supplement.

>>

Well, chemistry is closer to cooking than real science IMO. If you really want to understand how chemical reactions work or why molecules are structured the way they are, you need basic physics.
>>
>>7862521
Cuz you'll need it later dumbass!!!

And knowing is half the battle!!

What isn't memorization? Give me a single example.

It couldn't be taught through deriving it instead of memorization? Look at Math. You can memorize, but professors give you the proof on how the formula was formed, so a person can just learn to get to the formula instead of just memorizing it. Is there even that option in Chemistry?
>>
>>7862944
Dude, 1st month of 2nd semester into fucking Chem 101 and you think learning to memorise a bunch of meme ions that you had to deal with in even the lowest HS chemistry classes is normal?

no chemisty background here. just wandered in and taking a stab in the dark.

12n^2?
>>

how the heck did you get that answer

im legitimately curious
>>

is it 4n^2 + 5n?
>>

>bazooper
>>
>>7863671
Ok so n^2 is a way different number than n would be so I just canclled out the n's leaving me with
12n^2 + 5n... and then I just dropped the 5n because fuck it. sounds fun.

and posted it.

Whats the real way?
>>
>>7863673
>>7863666

Well, for one, this isn't chemistry, this is Math. Second, this is why memorization in Math will still fuck you over. Third, 4n+5.

You shouldn't even have to memorize these, just work with them enough until it's second nature.
>>
If you can't physically rationalize what you're taught in chemistry classes (besides nomenclature), you're either dumb or your instructor is shit.

The only people who think ochem is all memorization are retarded pre-med students.
>>
>>7863736
dumb people gotta make rent too
>>
>>7862537
honestly, as a senior chem major i just know those now. its not even important in what we do. its just something we know because we've been exposed to it so much.
>>
>/sci/ hates philosophy

If only you would open your stupid minds. People have been proposing answers to your questions for centuries but you're too dumb to listen.

>simply memories stuff
>never able to talk on an academic level

I don't doubt that people who memorize do well in the course. But they are honestly the ones who are dead crap to talk to/study with, they have no idea what to do on a lab when they fuck up. Literally take everything at face value.

And if you think is Chemistry is just memorizing, have you dug further or just posted on these threads?
>>
>>7863688

[math]\frac{12n^2 + 15n}{3n} = \frac{3n(4n + 5)}{3n} = 4n + 5[/math]
>>
>>7862781
I have never memorized the alphabet and I do English perfectly well.
>>
>>7862883

>>
>>7863800
I'm retarded so I figured it as this: "12 roots squared plus 15 roots divide both by 3 roots. 4 roots + 5 roots, 9 roots."

So I fucked up by forgetting a number divided by it's self leaves only the coefficient.
>>
>>7862537
all you really need to remember is
per-, -ate, hypo-, -ite, -ide, -ium, and what they correspond with along with the element.
>>
>>7862521
>2016
>remembering the entire chemical name instead of the roots
once you remember the roots, you can remember stuff like:
hexamethylenetriperoxidediamine
1,2 methylenedioxymethamphetamine
hexamethylenetetramine
tetramethylorthosilicate
almost instantly

No, chemistry requires memorization. You literally can't afford to mix up chemicals arbitrarily. There's a very good example of this on Breaking Bad.
>>
>>7864016
>Breaking Bad
holy fuck this meme is annoying

>>7862537

The entire premise of the show revolved around a chemistry teacher. There really aren't all that many shows on TV where actual chemistry comes up. It just doesn't tend to be relevant in popular culture.
>>
>>7862537
Are you expected to see the Formula, then tell it's name or the other way around?
>>
I actually understand OP, people are often told that they need no memorization just to find out that is true, and not even always, for the advanced parts. I wish people were more honest and downright told new students that yes, they do have to learn by heart chemistry.
>>
>>7862537
>my math teacher said to memorise all of the numbers all the way to 20

>Does one really learn anything through memorization?

all these mathfags that plague /sci/ you think they didnt have to memorise 2x2=4 and so on?

you need to lay the foundation for whatever shit you want to learn later on, not everything is a "deep understanding" wherein you have a house md moment and just "get" everything
>>
>>7863466

OChem and Genetics (y2s1) were the biology filters 100%. Gen chem does a pretty good job of weeding out the turds but year 2 really hits them.
