Everyone always says that the reason the 1918 influenza pandemic killed such a disproportionately high number of young, healthy adults is because the disease made their immune systems overreact by causing a surge of cytokines. This made the lungs fill with fluids, block the airways...your body basically drowns itself.
So I'm wondering, if a similar pandemic ever started, should I start drinking heavily, depriving myself of sleep, eating poorly and doing everything else I can think of to depress my immune system? Would this actually increase my odds of survival if I caught the flu?
