Why burn things in the first place to generate power? Heat engines are limited by carnot efficiency, but there is no such law for conversion of chemical energy to work.

The energy in fossil fuels was formed without human effort, and can pretty easily be extracted and turned into a massive list of different industry chemicals. I really can't foresee a way to synthesize burning fuel on a large-enough scale.
The next move will be redesigning the internal combustion engine altogether. But with the global economy the way it is, and the availability of oil, it's gonna have to wait a while.

A heat engine and the engine in your car are entirely different. Carnot engines work on the principle of a hot mass transferring energy to a cold mass, where work can then be extracted. The heat gradient is essentially a voltage gradient. Also, there all sorts of laws pertaining to work from chemical energy.

Retard, u need energy to create H2 in the first place. That energy comes from current power sources, like fossil fuels and nuclear energy.
In the process of creating H2 there's also energy loss... So you might aswell use a fossil fuel combustion engine.
