Most important today? Depends on your definition doesn't it? If by important you mean market demand, market value then I would say it's probably CS, mainly because of Big Data and IoT(Muh algorithms). Big Data has the potential to influence everything, from medicine, chemistry, engineering, to psychology, sociology, etc., if only we have good algorithms.
The other kind of important is subjective. I still like math the most and think It most important to me.

Yes there is, they are already working on that. Using paid codemonkeys to automate coding in some and given time, maybe all situations. Corporations don't want to pay for you if they can get an ATM to do it for them.
Can't have dirty meat-bags with their vacation needs, sick days, families, etc, holding us back from making the big bucks. Plus, all those unsightly mistakes.
Automation will end up covering transportation, and pretty much all the blue collar areas, on up to many white collar professions and even some of the creative industries. Even law and medicine are facing massive automation overhauls. General practice doctors will even be replaced with fancy kiosk that contains a learning computer that aggregates information from medical journals, records and other sources to provide services that may exceed the flesh and blood counterparts.
Where there is the will to make money, there will eventually be a way. STEM jobs are replaceable. It is only a matter of time. The question is, however, when automation gets to that level, where does it leave humanity?

Probably would be best major in CS and Maths with a minor in stats or data. Maths majors are also starting to take over the finance, business, and corporate world in drones.
