What is /sci/'s opinion of Data Science? I work in claims analytics for an insurance company and they're flooding our department with money to buy data from vendors. It's like executives got sold on big data from consultants or something. As far as I can tell it's just statistics + exploiting massive computation power.
I too have wondered about these two new memes, data science and big data.
In recent months I've seen city buses where the entire bus is plastered by a local university's masters in data science degree so there's a lot of money behind the meme.

Studying Data Science now. Data science CAN be useful, but probably often isn't.
The name itself is a meme, no one is sure what a data scientist is or what a data scientist does. Most of the people billing themselves as data scientists aren't data scientists; they're just programmers who want more pay. The reason it pays so well is because it uses so many business buzzwords- you have to be fluent in bullshit if you want a job as a data scientist, which is why it's hard to tell who is or isn't a data scientist.
An actual data scientist will be messing around with unstructured data for a lot of their time, then taking the useful data and applying various machine learning algorithms to find one which gives the best results and hopefully produces something that their employer can use- but obviously not every data scientist can deliver something useful, not all data is useful and the return on the investment in a data science team may not be worth it for some smaller companies- so it's kind of in a bubble right now, and while it's obvious big data analysis is useful, no one can tell you what it's worth.
