If you really want to appreciate category theory, I'd recommend learning algebraic topology. Without it, most of category theory is lacking motivation and appears arbitrary.

This isn't strictly true. You can learn (at least the basics of) category theory without much of anything, but it likely won't make any sense, you'll miss most of the examples, and you will have no motivation whatsoever.
