I don't believe that you will be able to get a research role as a full time job with a BEng, But, you can certainly work your way up to a PhD to do so. The answers are dependent on the university you plan on (or already) go to.

Switch to physics. If you dont drop out you will be kindly invited into research since there is not enough of them and there are almost no other options. Either you become a teacher go into research or waste your time becoming a manager in some business.

ChemE/NukE/EE and as much as I hate to say it -Biomed"""E"""- are all great for an interesting research career.

You can also go MechE -> Material Science, but the other research in the field is more macro engineering research, fluid flow etc.

All BEng's at my university have to do a publishable research project in their senior year which is usually tied either to a private R&D lab or is on a public grant often with ties to a national lab. If you do a good job you are usually hired at those places, but often you do grad-school part time while working for the lab full time.

It's not competitive because people realize how shitty research is and get industry jobs instead.

This is in ChemE. All BEng's have to do a research project, but some fields like MechE do joke projects which I consider neither publishable nor real research.
