Why do I have to spend a third of my life asleep?

It just seems so ridiculous to me that I need to throw away a third of my life in order to function like a normal human being. How could humans have evolved to do this?

Is there any way around it?

probably because we can't see shit in the night so we're better off conserving energy and secreting growth hormones instead.

I went for about ten years sleeping two hours or less per night.

I really liked having all the extra time, but it had its downside. I tend to have quite enjoyable dreams but during that ten years I would only dream three or four times a year.

When I went to sleep I never went to sleep so deep that I couldn't become fully alert instantly.

Google polyphasic sleep if you have some free time and feel dedicated

How did you function? Did you do work/school/uni during that time?

How did you not collapse, exhausted after a few days and sleep for like 12 hours?

It started while working two jobs, one developing software and one teaching math and then continued on while i went back to school to work on my doctorate.

When I first started, I would crash after a few days and sleep about eight hours. Those periods or sleep quickly got fewer and further between until they disappeared completely.

In July about ten years later I got some kind of infection and started sleeping between two and four hours a night. Since then my sleep has gradually increased until I get between four and eight hours a night now.

Didn't you feel like shit all the time? Also did it have an impact on your state/abilities?

I usually felt like I was somewhat worn out, but other than I was okay.

The day I took the GRE in 1995, I had about 2 hours sleep, maybe a bit less, drove about two hours to the testing center and made a 2200 on the GRE (800 math, 780 logic, and 620 verbal).

Did you ever take stimulants such as caffeine?

Bullshitting is fun!

It's not BS.

For what it's worth, I had four hours sleep this morning and couldn't sleep any more.

Just the caffeine in cokes and an occasional cup of coffee.

It wasn't the stimulants that kept me awake.
