I presume there are some aspiring neuroscientists or biologists here, even if they are a minority.
How painful is hanging oneself? How much time does it take for one to pass out?
My boyfriend committed suicide a couple weeks ago, I wish to know how much he suffered, if at all.
I have no background in neuroscience or biology and there is limited literature out there for obvious reasons, so I have no clue.
Also, consciousness and afterlife general if you wish.
I presume most of you do not believe in an afterlife, do you think anything we experience in real life can be comparable to non-existence?

Pressure was applied by his body, not by kneeling or anything of the sort.
Some sources I've read say thrashing and such go on for a couple minutes after the neck is suspended, which seems like a hell of a lot of time.

His suffering depends on the height he dropped himself at. The key is falling from a height sufficient to snap the spinal cord, therefore eliminating suffering. I believe the English, as industrious as they were, experimented with this on prisoners and made a table of ideal dropping height, included as an attachment to this comment. This is also the reason why they made stages for hanging prisoners, it was to insure proper falling height.
If your boyfriend just slipped his neck through the loop and kicked the chair away, he is almost guaranteed to have a bad time, forcing himself to die suffering as he is slowly choked to death while having the feeling of his head being pulled off his body.

OP, if you're still around and want to feel what it's like to have blood flow to your head restricted, maybe try going to a Judo or Brazilian Jiu-Jutsu dojo and ask to have a choke demonstrated on you, the chokes in those martial arts cut off blood circulation to the head, so they would simulate (safely) what it would feel like to hang yourself.
If the circulation is cut off properly, consciousness is lost in ~10 seconds. After 30s to a minute, there's enough oxygen loss to cause irreversible brain damage. He would be dead after around 3 minutes, although convulsions could continue for hours.
