1. we solve the parenthesis
25 / 5(5)

2. we solve the Exponents
-

3. we multiply
25 / 25

4. We divide
1
>>
>>7740056
How can you post pemdas and still fuck it up
>>
>>7740025
distribute first
25 / 10 + 15
then divide
2.5 + 15
then add
17.5
>>
The way that it's written, the answer is 25.

If you assume it's 25/(5(2+3)), then it's 1.

I don't know why you would assume the extra parenthesis, but I remember reading some article about how these problems can technically be solved either way and it's not wrong. That doesn't make sense to me and it's just 25 unless the extra parenthesis are there, but yeah.
>>
>>7740056
You have to go left to right

>>7740066
You can't just randomly distribute, 5(2+3) is being divided by something
>>
>>7740067
Can you find that article?
>>
>>7740025
In the end it all comes to notation, writing an expression like that is just pure ignorance.
>>
>>7740056
This. The real problem is the notation. That's why everyone give different answers.

You can think as if it's

5(5) / 5(5)

If you do it like this, it's fucking retarded to think that you can arrange it like such:

5 (5/5) 5
>>
>>7740091
agreed, it forces you to assume things
>>
is it 25 / 5(2+3) or 25 / (5(2+3))
>>
>>7740102
It's actually 25 * 1/(5(2+3)) according to number properties.
>>
>>7740121
Can you explain?
I'm not familiar
>>
>>7740163
To be honest, it could be both because it's unclear if the (2+3) is multiplying the 25 or the 5. You'd have to write it down with actual algebraic notation to know whether it is 25 or 1.
>>
>>7740175
You are retarded
>>
>>7740192
How would you do it?
>>
>>7740196
it has to be read like 25 / 5 * (2+3)/1 then its
(25 *(2+3)) / 5
>>
>>7740094
>>7740175
>>7740196

there is no problem with notation.
PEMDAS is shit.

There is just different priorities, and priority from left to right.
parentheses
multiplication and division
addition and substraction

25/5(2+3)

evaluate what's inside the parentheses: 2+3 = 5
you're left with 25/5x5
multiplication and division have the same priority, so go from left to right

25/5 = 5
5x5 = 25

result is 25. There has never been any ambiguity and there is no counter example since this rule is systematic.

>>7740208
Yes. OP's is the second way, first would need extra set of parentheses.
>>
It would be 1 were it written like this
25/(5 (2+3)) but it isn't (the 5 and the parentheses aren't implicitly grouped by a diagonal fraction bar, only a vertical one containing all the terms), so the answer is 25.
>>
>>7740210
Thanks. It makes sense but it's still fucking stupid the way it's written. Lambda notation is best notation.

No.. You simplify the parenthesis before multiplication.

There is no pemdas anywhere actually.

But if it's left to right shouldn't the answer be 10?

>>
It's 25.

This bait is getting very stale.
>>
The order goes: parentheses, multiplication and division, addition and subtraction. Therefore:
[math]
25 / 5(2+3)
= \frac{25}{5 \cdot 2 + 5 \cdot 3}
= \frac{25}{10 + 15}
= \frac{25}{25}
= \frac{1}{1}
= 1

[/math]
>>
>>7740500
They're the same fucking thing.

Mathematical notation is not arbitrary.
>>
>>7740513
That is not the notation in the OP.
You just added parenthesis to everything post division. Division notation <> to fractional notation.
>>
>>7740056
You divided by (2+3), not multiplied by (2+3)

A "/" symbol does not divide the expression into two parts, this would be insanity. When a "/" is used it means that the following number will be divided by, if you want to do several divisions, just use several symbols.

>what is a troll thread

>>
Consider this: If it is causing misunderstandings, then it's obviously a bad notation.
>>
I understand why people think it is 25 according to the rules of PEMDAS and that multiplication and division are grouped together, but multiplication involving parenthesis takes priority over division. This means that 25/5(5) is 1 while 25/5*5 is 25.

Answer is one.

25 / 5(2+3)
25 / 5(5)
25 / 25
1

Why do you people try to delete the parenthesis just because you simplify it?

5(2+3) does NOT equal 5 * 5. The expression is written as five times two plus three. The parenthesis don't get deleted. You still have to solve the priority expression. Simplifying those parenthesis don't get get deleted.

The answer is one.

yes but 25/5 isn't bracketed you slime

omg an internet website say the answer, it must be true.

It's a pretty trusted website for math, just saying.

Retards gonne retard. It all depends on the brackets.

25/5(2+3)

or

(25/5)(2+3)

Seeing as you didn't use the second one, the answer would be 1.
