Are people who try to memorize a lot of decimals of pi(or other constants) intellectually simple human beings?
>>
Yes. Likely insecure as well
>>
the more digits they memorize, more intellectual they are. i know the first 2 digits 5/7
>>
yes you are an intellectually simple human being op
>>
>>7728323
Depends on what other stuff they do.
>>
No, but they might be incredibly boring human beings.
>>
>>7728323

On this scale, I'm in "you're a dick" territory: 3.1415926535897...

The reason why the personal cutoff there, is because that's how far off various TI calculators float it. I seem to want to say there's a 238 string just a bit further out, and two consecutive digits for the first time, :^) not much further. I'll look after I post this.

To OP's point, we have the old politically incorrect name/meme of (idiot)-savants (low-functioning autists, or so pop culture suggests), who can crunch calendars, phone books and so on. I think of the tard (and sole survivor) from the movie "Cube" whose only skill was to do the arithmetic they needed to stay alive/work the puzzle. There is one autist who actually did recite pi out to 10,000 places IIRC, with a view toward going another order of magnitude.
>>
>>7728323
Screw pi! Tau is king!

Also time^3!
>>
>>7728323
Yes.
Thinking that "pi" is a special number means that you don't understand maths.

The special thing is that various ratios from different topics turn out to be the same. The number involved could easily have been 2*pi, or 1/pi, depending on arbitrary definitions.

>Thinking that "pi" is a special number means that you don't understand Maths.
>mfw pure math phd's are obsessed with it.
>>
>>7728323
yeah its a bit of a pointless talent. I once did it because I hated my brother in law's guts and he liked doing pointless little shit like that to impress people.
>>
If they just try, they could be... If they can, they aren´t. It depends on it, what dou you mean by word "normal"... For example, I can memorize pi for 306 digits (it isn not so much...) and my IQ is 143. Am i normal for you? Or not? Over that i think, that it doesn´t depend on your IQ level. It´s about some unspecifiable feeling. It´s really hard to learn it, if you haven´t got that feeling. I haven´t got it, so for me it is hard.
>>
>>7733227
Wow for such a le smart person your writing really sucks ass. Maybe you should stop memorizing pointless strings of numbers to prove to yourself you are smart you fucking name fag.

Now is your IQ really 143 or did you get that from some internet test? My IQ is 142 tested 2 times by an actual psychologist for unrelated issues(They thought I had the 'tisms) and I have proudly commited... Only 8 digits of pi to my long term memory. I only know those through looking at it through calculators or some shit, setting out to memorize digits of pi means you are goddamned pathetic. I have better things to do with my time than memorize an infinitesimal amount of a number to make me less insecure or impress other people.
>>
>>7728323
No. They are just "people who try to memorize a lot of decimals of pi(or other constants)".

People who judge other are usually "intellectually simple human beings".
>>
I know it to 18 decimal places because I was a boring and bored person in year 10
Come to think of it, I suppose I still am boring, unless you like rocks, space or vidya
>>
>>7731788
>Thinking that "pi" is a special number means that you don't understand maths.

No it doesnt, but the people who dont understand math think it's special for different reasons than people who do understand math.
>>
>>7728323
No, but they aren't geniuses.

>>7733481
Fuck off with your political correctness.
People who judge others are only judgemental. There are dumb, average and smart people who are also judgemental.
>>
>>7733655
Tell me about rocks and space
>>
Memorizing pi so you can march it out when you feel insecure IS the mark of an insecure person.

However, I memorized a great deal of pi (50~ digits) because I was testing out some learning techniques and the digits were readily available.
>>
i remember the 6 first by a corny text i was taught, αει ο θεος ο μεγας γεωμετρει, but it extends to 23 digits by "Αεί ο Θεός ο Μέγας γεωμετρεί,
το kύkλου μήkος ίνα ορίση διαμέτρω,
παρήγαγεν αριθμόν απέραντον,
kαί όν, φεύ,
ουδέποτε όλον θνητοί θα εύρωσι." which roughly translates to "eternally the great god measures the earth and in order to define the length of the circle he produced an ever long number, alas mortal man shall never compute it all". in case you missed it, the number of letters in each word is each digit. of course, i’ve never needed more than 6. memorizing more is just a party trick
>>
>>7734936
*the length of the circle through the diametre

>>7728323
it's an autistic thing

i remember doing it just for the fun of it and most likely that's the autistic reasoning
>>
>>7728323
I memorised the first 100 digits one night after watching an episode of Futurama that had a joke about it when I was 10 years old. It was just something fun I did and never felt was important. My pride came from my good grades throughout high school and now university, not something I did when I was 10.
>>
>>7734936

what thats so cool
>>
>>7728323
Yes.

I've had the same phone number (cellphone) for the past 7 years and I still don't know my number off my heart.

If someone asks for it, I have to find it manually and read it out 3 digits at a time for them.

Yet I am smarter than anyone on this board and I have never come across anyone who is more intelligent than me.
>>
>>7735070
Now for 500$:
>I have never come across anyone who is more intelligent than me
I know this one! Things dumb douchebags say!!
>>
>>7735162
Incorrect! I'm afraid the right answer would have been "this is bait".

We proceed to sudden death:
>sage and hide
>>
>>7731788
you are trying way too hard to not be a popsci fan
>The number involved could easily have been 2*pi, or 1/pi
I bet you actually thought you were smart for figuring that out

Rocks are awesome. My favourite mineral is fluorite because it's pretty and I'm shallow and vapid. Rocks look cool under cross-polarised lenses in a petrographic microscope (microcline feldspar looks cool too because it has this cross-hatched twinning, so it looks kinda like tartan but grey). Labradorite is also fucking cool because it has this awesome iridescence (google it, shit's awesome)
Space I don't know as much about because that has little to do with my degree so it's a less formal interest, but it's got lots of stuff in it, just very far apart mostly. Space exploration I find interesting because of all the technology that comes out of it plus rockets and shit appeal to my childish delight. Space rocks are my favourite though, because if a big enough one whacks into Earth, it'll cause lots of fuckery with the atmosphere (the palaeocene-eocene thermal maximum may have been triggered by an extraterrestrial impact event), as well as bringing in lots of lovely rare elements like iridium
I hope I have fulfilled your request. Half of it's probably wrong because I just said what came to mind but ah well :^)
>>
No. They're pedofiles who are trying to memorize the child porn in Pi.

Ban Pi now.
>>
>>7735318
Make Pi a safe space
>>
I know about it to about 40 places but that's only because I enjoy memorization.
>>
>>7733464
I know level of my IQ from MENSA. I was on their testing. So... No, it really isn´t from some "internet test"... :D I don´t understand, why are you so aggressive. If it seems to you be pointless, fine. It is pointless... I agree with you. :) I´ve just tried to answer the question acording to my opinion. I do not need to prove to myself, that I am smart. By the way... Nobody of my friends and family know, that i can memorize it. I do not think, that I am smart. I remember that, because it is fun for me and it is good form of relaxation. It makes me calmer in some situations. That´s all. You should try to be more polite for next time. You have said, that your IQ is 142... Which scale? My IQ is in Stanford-Binet scale...
