If I want to become a high school STEM teacher, would I be better off getting an education degree, a STEM degree, or something else?

STEM plus your university's teaching option in the degree (e.g. UTeach for University of Texas). Unless you're bad at math then do education.

doesn't matter really

If you get a teaching degree, you have to teach, you take less STEM courses and more education/humanities courses.

If you get a STEM degree, you lose out on the teacher training stuff, but you can work elsewhere more easily. With a degree, you can work as a substitute teacher and then get your teaching license after.

STEM, then do your Teacher Training

Teaching degree is much, much easier for the exact same job.

If you do STEM you will need an additional qualification in most places.

This.
I'm not a teacher nor do I have experience in teaching, but my sister did the second route.
Got degree from Berkeley, got a part time job as a substitute teacher for math at a private school, which didn't require she have a teaching license or any sort of credential. Eventually became a long term sub. Got her teaching license, teaches there now.

Figured the personal experience might help.

If you really want to become a teacher get the education degree. If you are actually very unsure aim for a regular STEM degree. If you realise it is too hard drop down to education degree. Maybe get the education degree afterwards as a bonus if you have the time/money and are really set on becoming a teacher.

However DO NOT underestimate the dedicated education training those teaching degrees will give you. Maybe many people here on /sci/ look down on humanity courses and didactic, but they are very important skills for a teacher to have, since high school kids are not adults and will behave like retards.

Came into this thread to back these anons up, get a STEM degree and do substitute teaching for training. You will get a more accurate "taste" of what the education environment/ kids are like, the schools/teachers will be thankful for the support, it looks better in your resume and if you have second thoughts you can just move on to something else.

This is from someone who has done sub work (and talked with teachers and intervention specialist) while waiting for a technical training position to open up in security.
