There's a vacuum in the tube. What happens when the red lock at the bottom is opened?

There's your answer

I don't think you know what a vacuum is.
>>
>>7694157
Depends, is the vacuum on or off?
>>

Nothing. Your logic would work if it was a barrier keeping air on Earth but it's the weight of the air itself that keeps it down.

It's all relative.
Besides, you're criticizing him and not OP?

Air will rush into the tube and fill it to the level of the rest of the atmosphere.

Then nothing will happen after that.

The entire Earth is already a giant column of atmosphere with vacuum on top; the base has just been bent around so the edges meet.

The atmosphere, finding no pressure behind the lock, flows up the tube, the pressure difference overcoming the pull of gravity. As atmosphere fills the tube, the pressure difference diminishes, and when there is no longer a pressure difference, atmosphere stops flowing into the tube.

No significant momentum?

Probably not enough to get any large amount of atmosphere to fountain out of the top of the pipe, and certainly not enough to get any of it to escape velocity such that it won't splash back down again.

If you stick your penis in, it will stretch by at least 3cm and stay at that size

The moment you open it, air gets pushed into the tube so hard that the first air that came in will reach terminal velocity, then it will stabilize and be half filled with air after that.

this is strange.

gravity is strong enough to hold the oceans in place but weak enough for the moon's gravity to affect it.

whats stopping the air from being sucked out if there is no barrier?

1) Gravity holds the atmosphere in place.
2) There is nothing "sucking" it.

the laws of density does. gravity is weak compared to the laws of density. you can overcome the theory of gravity by releasing a balloon full of helium.
