I would just buy a cheap, large screen tablet off of a Chinese site if that is your only use for the tablet. Make sure it supports a high capacity microSD card and having a decent amount of internal memory wouldn't hurt either.

I recently bought a Nook HD+ for this exact reason.
Managed to snipe the 32GB model off ebay in good condition for about $40.
pros
>It's great for reading: lightweight + high resolution screen (1920x1200)
>cheap as fuck
>expandable storage
>decent battery life (It'll make it a least 2 or 3 days with moderate use)
cons
>The default android favor is weird, and kind of slow (I put Cyanogenmod on mine, which helped a lot)

bought it a year or so ago for 250 buckeroos.
it's cheap, has multi window mode so you can read stuff while writing in another app, and can be used for a long time. only downside is the recharge rate, but i just let it charge overnight.
if you want to use a tablet often, just go with 10 inches or something like that; It's easier to read without constantly scrolling and displays the entire page to be read at a comfortable distance.

you realise most university colleges don't allow for you to take collegebooks home, do you? and even then, there is only like 2 pair, and always taken because everyone has the 'brilliant' idea to just use the library books.
