First time on /sci/ so be gentle, I'm trying to figure out specs for a hypothetical engine, I've only learned about volumetric efficiency a couple hours ago so if I'm doing something wrong let me know.
So this is what I'm coming up with
targeted Horsepower: 800 at 8000 rpm
displacement: 311.8 ci
thermal efficiency: .25
Fuel flow: 428.48 pounds per hour
Brake specific fuel consumption: .5356
Mass airflow: 5,356 pph
Required airflow: 1166.75
Required volumetric efficiency: 1.616 (161.6%)
Manifold atmospheric pressure: 48.3532133813" (or 23.74888 PSI of boost)
What would be the best airflow for said engine? Now i know I probably missed a lot of info but I'm just brainstorming here.
Any advice or ideas are appreciated, or if there's a better board for this just let me know

another thing, otto cycle or diesel cycle?

Alright thanks, I'm originally from /o/ just figured you guys might be more knowledge

Awesome! Im really interested in figuring this stuff out and learning more on the subject so anything is appreciated.

Otto cycle
>>7691377
are you sure that the displacement is equal to 51 liters?
>>7691377
my fault, i've mistyped the displacement
>>7691750
No worries friend, I could be wrong on a lot of this stuff I only started researching Volumetric efficiency about 10hrs ago now
>>7691755
last question, what do you mean exactly with "best" airflow
>>7691762
You know I'm not even quite sure, I was thinking in terms of efficiency, I guess I know the required airflow but would more air help ? I'm I thinking of this to simply are their more variables I need to factor in? I guess my real question is am I on the right track?

if you mean thermal efficiency you're right, t.e. will increase with more air
>>7691771
otto cycle has a t.e. value included between 0.20 and 0.30, so if you want to maximize t.e. value, you have to know the exact airflow value for that t.e. value

Okay cool, thanks dude. Do you have any suggestions on other math I should learn if I were to get deeper into this stuff?

Simple calculus functions like integers or derivatives. You have to learn how to manage thermodynamics transformations like isobars, isotherms, polytropics and very important diagrams like Mollier diagram or Gibbs diagram

Awesome, il definitely look into that. I can't thank you enough. Here's my favorite meme face for your troubles
