when will lightsabers exist?
>>7685193
Never, because they're dumb.
>>7685193
Sometime after next Thursday
>>7685193
They do exist. We call them flashlights.
>>7685207
lol
>>7685194
>implying it wouldn't be badass
>>7685273
go back to your cave manchildren
>>7685275
>he's never trained doing backflips in his front yard with a cardboard tube in preparation for Jedi training
>>7685194
More /sci/ closed mindedness. Lightsabre research is a worthwhile endeavour because of the huge Star Trek market. Katanas still sell despite being last used in war 150 years ago.
>>7685369
>Star Trek market
I will show you, the dark side.
>>7685193
When we can bend and contain light on a macro scale, which probaly be after holograms are mainstream.
>>7685193
To create a light saber we would need:
>100% control over light and the knowledge of how to contain it on a macro scale. (Making it stay within a controlled environment rather than the laser traveling as long as pic related).
>A laser powerful enough to cut through metal, (To do this we would actually need plasma, so actually, it should be called a "Plasma Sabre").
>A metal alloy dense enough to contain it. (Probably a mixture of Tungsten and something else).
>>7685606
Forgot the pic
>guard would just get cut off
Nice meme sword
>>7685606
Dude, lasers that can cut through metal do exist...
>>7685685
the guards are connected to the primary blade, so you might damage the hilt, but the bearer's hands would be protected by the side guards
>>7685193
we can do lasers, but they can't be used like that.
an actual weapon like that CAN be created using magnetically contained super heated plasma.
the down side is we can't make plasma generators that small. a modern model would require a plasma generator fitted to the back of a semi-truck.
also such a sword is impractical in modern combat, better to use a tomahawk and assault rifle.

lol, with a power outlet, capacitors and coolers which are the size of a small car battery, which takes about a minute to go through a lead panel
