My girlfriend does biology at university and we were discussing if a parasite could ever take control of a human as its host the same way it does insects, would this ever be possible?

Well Toxoplasma Gondii makes rats go suicidal, so it's not far off to think something like that could influence human behaviour too, maybe not 100% though. I think I heard some stories about how funghi might be the cause of some forms of schizophrenia.

Quite a while back I recall reading about flukes.
Some people know about liver flukes and the like, but apparently there are bacterial and fungal flukes that attach themselves to your CNS. Apparently.

Yeah. Theoretically it could change neurohormone levels to make you desire close contact/cuddling, or secrete toxins that induce delirium and violence. It wouldn't consciously be controlling the host, no parasite does, but it would change behaviour with no issue.
