Everyone tends to talk shit on Biology as the worst of the STEM majors.
Is it actually better to just go be an RN with a BSN and become a Physician's assistant from there?
>>
People tend to look down on Biology because it won't bring inmediate joy or progress from it's investigations, ecologists are the ones that suffer this more than molecular branches, because they're seen as insufferable hippies. At least that's what I've seen and experienced.

Personally I think field biologists have the coolest STEM jobs.

Also a biologist cracked the genome project in the end.

I have a lot of respect for quality researchers in the field.

Problem is that undergrad biology is seen as the easy STEM major so a lot of kids with no aptitude for science take it. Not to mention premeds.

Seriously according to that SA study there's something like 17 (seventeen) biology undergrads for every one Physics or ChemE undergrad.

It's ridiculous, so unfortunately it's the normie STEM major even if a biology major on /sci/ is probably a much higher quality student than the general perception of the major.

So it's a case of some sort of elitism is a way?
Meaning, that because it's the most common it's perceived as the easiest? Even though it seems like it actually IS the easiest.
But more to my second question, what does /sci/ think of PA's and RN's? From what I've seen it's still a decent amount of work, albeit a little more hands-on.

/sci/ just shills math, nothing new here.

>Meaning, that because it's the most common it's perceived as the easiest? Even though it seems like it actually IS the easiest.
Well it attracted that many students in the first place because it was -perceived- as the easiest and doesn't have as much math which a large portion of girls entering STEM are scared to death of.

So yes, basically elitism. Undergrads in Physics/Math/Engineering don't want to be grouped with biology students never mind each other.

I don't really know what those are tb.h family.

PA = Physician's assisant (Masters)
RN= Registered nurse with a BSN (Bacherlors of Science in Nursing)

Ah.

My brother is an MD. Nurses with qualifications in anesthesia are making six figures because it's cheaper to employ them for it than full MDs.

You should do that for mad dosh imo. Don't really know much about PAs

One of the highest starting salaries you can actually get at a young age right now. More than twice what lawyers are starting out with.

That's pretty yummy. I wonder how the daily life is for them?

Brehs...those numbers on that chart

I feel like I've gone about this all wrong..

I'm in plant bio. You don't understand my suffering

CRNA is outrageously hard to get into. You need like 5 years minimum hospital experience and have to be super on the ball about everything. Plus it is mega competitive, only 12 got accepted into the program in GA last year. 12... in the whole fucking state.
>>
>>7671815
Normal BSN's still make like 97k in California.
>>
>>7671890
Getting into a BSN program is pretty competitive too.
Not as competitive as that though.
>>
Is there a stigma on /sci/ against Pre-Medical students?
>>
>>7672138
Theres a stigma amongst biologists about pre-meds

Every semester I want to rant to my gen bio students about how statistically 97% of them will fail to be doctors and that all the 3.2 GPA students in the room should start considering alternatives

But no, they go forth and get B's in every class they take and end up with a degree with no networking and a pile of rejection letters, unable to think of any other practical application for their degree

Biologist here

My main interest is mycology but I'm not sure what I'll do my Masters in.

Currently dual majoring in Biology with Ecology focus and Marine Biology with a minor in Chemistry and Security

I wish people in the math and electrical sciences weren't so elitist. I'm intelligent enough for math or technology, but it's not as fascinating or rewarding as bio science, IMO.

Veterinary medicine student here. Life is pain. Everything is hard.
Should have done biology and fucked around with reptiles.
You guys have it easy

i major in biochemistry. I've taken gen bio 1, gen bio 2, genetics, cell bio, biochem 1 and 2.

all biology at the undergrad level has ever taught me is the importance of understanding knowledge determined by research. biochem a little less so.

my chemistry courses have emphasized the importance of taking theory and applying it to new problems. it's versatile and does not rely purely on memorization to solve a problem.

Biology is a meme degree. Not only does everyone do it because its easy (like multiple people in the therad suggested already) but you could easily train a chemist to do a biologists job. all it takes is "know these facts we've found through research". there, you can now do a biologists job. Ideally the chemist will understand the concepts at the atomic level as well. This makes for a much more understanding biologist. so why not just hire the chemist?

It's much more difficult to take a biologist and get him/her to do a chemists job. They need to know various fields of theory which are applied to a range of problems (organic), they need to know more advanced math (Pchem, thermo) and they need to know how to apply all of this efficiently, that is learn the material and then be able to apply it without fucking up the theory. Its a field more focused on solving a new problem rather than focusing on facts determined through research. A biologist could not do a chemists job. They dont know the theory and have not had experience in applying it. Once again, conversely, teaching a chemist to do a biologists job takes memorization and a bundle of flashcards.

Chemistry > Biology every day of the week.

if you are looking to solve problems by applying biology, become a doctor. Good luck doing that without learning your chem.

Here on brazil you pay them separately, I've seen some gaining no less than 6000 PER DAY, if they work on the private sector.

That's because they cost 500 bucks at the very cheapest and they make participate on about 10 surgeries per day, some times more. Ofc there's the price of the anesthesia which they have to pay from their pocket, but still.

And that was some years ago, the inflation here was crazy on the last years so I'm sure the median price is probably the double of that.
