Why does /sci/ hate on engineering so much, but glorify pure math and science? All that engineering is is pretty much using what scientists and mathematicians have discovered to create/modify stuff. In order to do this, engineers have to understand what scientists from a range of fields understand...

Soooo...what's the problem here?

I'm not sure to be honest. I happen to think anything involving science or math is worth the praise. Computer science too, but /sci/ doesn't like CS majors either. Maybe it's because people here just like to argue and show off how much they know in one field.
>>
>>7668192

Because it's easier to pretend to be a theoretical scientist or a mathematician than it is an engineer.

Engineers usually actually produce something. It would be quite a feat to convince yourself that you are an engineer if you haven't done jack shit in your life. On the other hand, the work of a mathematician or theoretical scientist is usually more ephemeral, their work might not bear physical fruit in their lifetime and sometimes it is entirely theoretical. Much easier to delude yourself into believing you are this type of person.
>>
>>7668192

We don't. There's one really autistic physics drop out that thinks engineering is blasphemy to the church of physics that used to spam gay porn and one tryhard kid that parrots him to fit in here.
>>
>>7668192
>engineers have to understand

top lel

engineers don't have to understand anything except how to put numbers to a function

because they rationalize not producing anything of real value to the world by hating everyone that does.

It's what's known as a "dank meme."

Daily reminder this is the bitter loser who keeps perpetuating all these retarded major politics threads.

Fucking IT monkeys have way too much free time in front of a computer screen.
>>
>>7668415
What?
>>
>>7668421
The dude dropped out of engineering after 2 semesters then finished a physics degree to eventually fall into the IT void.

The butthurt reverberated across the universe and eventually collided into /sci/.
>>
Because every time an engineer hears the slightest negative thing regarding their trade they throw a hissy fit saying "we actually USE science and math, why do you ivory-tower nobodies playing with mental toys that have nothing to do with the real world want to distance yourself from us?" The irony being completely lost on them.

You call a mathematician a self-masturbatory circle-wanker and he says "more than you know." You call an engineer a pencil-pushing salary whore, they huff and puff about how they actually understand how things work and everyone else is just running in circles.

It seems to me like engineers are the ones who hate engineering to be so defensive about it.
>>
>>7668432
>I should get to say derogatory things without being called out for my bullshit :(
No.

The only irony here is that you are perpetuating your own butthurt. Every time some moron posts some nonsense comment and it is rebuffed by several posts with detailed facts and statistics then the delusional autist who started it will try to whine that s/he is being bullied and try to attack the character of "engineers" much like you are doing now.

Pathetic desu.
>>
>>7668192
Engineers have a huge superiority complex and need to be taken down a few pegs from time to time.
>>
>>7668247
Thank you for this. So much. Idiots spouting quasi scientific facts they found on the internet that they don't actually understand. Then, when they're done ragging on applied sciences, they laugh at the philosophy students like they don't realize that theoretical math or science isn't just another form of philosophy.
>>
Because we think we are smarter (because we am) while at the same time we realize that a lot of stuff we do is mere art: masturbatory creation of stuff, much of which will fail and almost nobody will use in our lifetime. So we need affirmation that we are better.
Secondly, there is an anger coming from the fact that talking with engineers is exhausting: they don't even know what fields exist and how deep the rabbit holes go, and so they talk like they are close to understanding math and physics.
>>
>>7668544
>we am
The average Civil Engineer is smarter than you.
>>
>>7668192
Two things come to mind.
-Jealousy towards something that is easily of more direct utility. No one likes feeling like someone can do what they know in theory, but better.
-A reaction to a common trend of people doing garbage work, inefficient, trivial, and honestly, outright stupid work and calling it "engineering" and themselves the "engineer". There are a lot of people that are very bad at their jobs.

I don't like seeing all the people ragging on engineering here either, but the above remains true. I'm not good enough at anything to be either one, and at least I admit it.
>>
>>7668247
>the work of a mathematician or theoretical scientist is usually more ephemeral, their work might not bear physical fruit in their lifetime
Surely that makes it much LESS ephemeral. After all, an engineer's work will be very quickly expanded upon and replaced, whereas work that is still being thought about after you're dead is as far from ephemeral as possible.
I don't have a problem with engineering, but your post is nonsense.
>>
>>7668962
Statics has lasted for 2000 years and will probably be useful millennia from now.

And yes, it is an engineering field, developed with engineering applications in mind from Aristotelian theory.

There are many other theoretical developments in engineering fields that will last longer than many pure field developments such as the concept of unit operation balances etc.
>>
>>7668192
It's an academic elitism thing. Pure scientists look down on engineers, engineers look down on mechanics/technicians

>>
>>7668432
To be fair all engineers hate engineering. Mostly because everyone makes it more retarded than it should be. Literally motherfuckers will hire you on a project that basically demands you do something completely impossible in an absurd time frame and refuse to let you adjust the demands to be more you know actually possible and then when you complain they just respond with "well you are an engineer right?" Or some other bull shit.

So yea engineers in general are pretty angry people because we have to actually deal with the retards of the world whereas some one who is a physicist is revered as a god and just writes papers and people hang on their every word.

No joke when I first started working as an engineer we had a guy who had a PhD in physics and we used to make him tell people up the ladder why their requirements were not possible because they literally wouldn't believe any of the engineers on the project.
>>
>>7669150

That's hilarious. Funny how intelligent people can delude themselves so much.
>>
>>7669113
Engineers look down on academics too actually. They think it's people who couldn't find jobs in industry "those who can't do teach" etc. are common jibes.

>Pure scientists
Which in industry are lab technicians.

The problem stems from a deeper one in the disconnect between academia and practice.
>>
>>7669150
>Literally motherfuckers will hire you on a project that basically demands you do something completely impossible in an absurd time frame
Confirmed for not knowing anything about engineering.

That's kind of bitchy passive aggressive complaints by code developers who refer to themselves as "software engineers [sic]". This never happens at any good company and everywhere else if you tell your superior it can't be done your opinion is respected (unless you're not Nuke/Chem/EE master race).

>some one who is a physicist is revered as a god and just writes papers and people hang on their every word.
Is this what physicists actually believe? Literally only your own students think of you that way. And no one reads your papers except other physicists and if you're lucky and good enough maybe a few engineers will find applications for your work one day.
>>
>>7669200
Wrong on all accounts. I am an EE, this actually happened when I first started. It was a shit company desu I left after a year.

But the attitude was fairly prevalent back in the day. Nowadays its much different. But you still have aging professors who act like this. I have a nephew studying EE who comes to me fairly often for help and I see the same bs. I hope it's just the school but it is a mindset reminiscent of when I first started.
>>
>>7668192
First, /sci/ doesn't glorify math and science.
Let me explain why you believe this.

In sci there are 3 kinds of people. Physics autists that think engineers are insecure faggots, Engineer autists that think non-engineers are insecure faggots... and engineers from disciplines other than their own are insecure faggots and normal people from a mixed set of studies.

*Within the set of normal people there are both engineers and physicists... the ones who are not autistic.

If you go to a thread made a physics autist it will be flooded with other physics autists circle jerking. Maybe 1 or two engineer autists sticking around to "prove everyone wrong".

If you go to a thread made by an engineering student you will only see a bunch of engineers shitting on non-engineering degrees. People repeating the same arguments over and over, circlejerking, echo chamber, call it whatever you want. Again, there will be 1 or 2 physics students "proving everyone wrong".

Your mistake, OP, is that you have gone to many threads made by physics autists and they made you believe their meme.

And if you are wondering exactly what I mean by autist let me get my definition from the Royal 4chan Dictionary

/sci/ autist (noun): Someone who unironically believes that their degree is inherently superior to others. This believe includes but is not limited to thinking that people from your degree are smarter than people from other degree and thinking that people with a different degree will never get a job because jobs simply do not exist for anyone other than people with your degree.
>>
>>7668192
Because this board is for borderline autistic people to insult each other to bolster their fragile self-esteem. If they thought shitting out of their mouth was the peak of intellectual achievement, they'd post gifs of themselves with feces in their mouths just to lord it over people.
>>
>>7669382
Same guy.

And to show you why CS is a shit degree and why CS students are usually so retarded I'll give you my perspective as a math major.

I study mathematics. I take classes of calculus, topology, linear algebra, abstract algebra, computer science, geometry, real analysis. complex analysis, graph theory, etc.

Notice that computer science is in that list. You should know that computer science is no more than a branch (of a branch) of mathematics.

So imagine that someone instead of studying mathematics would go to some shitty college and study calculus.

4 years, 8 semesters of calculus.

Of course, they would reach a level of understanding of calculus much higher than we do because they would be doing calculus every single day for 4 years... but what would you think of this person?

Specializing in a branch (of a branch) of mathematics AS THEIR BACHELORS DEGREE.

That is retarded, completely retarded. Now switch "calculus" with "computer science" and you will get the idea.

However, people who get their Masters of Doctorate degrees at computer science are perfectly respectable people. CS, like any other, is a respectable branch of mathematics.

But again, you don't get a Bachelors Degree in Calculus so you also should not get a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science.
>>
>>7669320
When I was a fucking intern on my first job I told the departmental supervisor that developing the code for the simulation -which 5 other people on the project needed including PhD holders- that I would need 3 weeks more time -bottle necking an entire reactor development- than the initial deadline just because I wanted a more generalized script and he took my recommendation without question. I have never been in a situation where my word is disregarded by bureaucrats like you're describing.

I don't know why you would get involved with loser companies that do not trust their own engineers. Or that has a structure where someone without an engineering background is in a technical management position.

>>7669382
Engineer autist master race.
>>
>wageslaves

>Implying I didn't get an engineering degree to better run my own manufacturing startup.

Goddamn NEETS, I know it's difficult for you to understand that not everyone works for a salary, but CMON.
>>
>>7669404
If you think the CS you did is the same as what is done in a real CS degree you're the only retard in this situation. It's kind of like a high-school kid who thinks he understands Physics after his AP classes.
>>
>>7669443
>rely on someone else for money
literally the same as a "wageslave" only we make a shitton more money
>>
>>7669469
If you think the calculus you did is the same as what is done in a real calculus degree you're the only retard in this situation. It's kind of like a high-school kid who thinks he understands Physics after his AP classes.

>Implying that the dedicated computer science classes + everything else in a pure math degree doesn't qualify me to work on the same problems you are capable to work on.

Unlike you, Calculus graduate. I can choose to work as a software developer with just bachelors or go into the many other industries that hire math grads.

Seriously, what made you think that getting a bachelors degree in Calculus would make you special?
>>
>>7669469

You don't specialize in Abstract Algebra or Topology or Quantum Physics or High-Energy Physics at an undergrad level either.
>>
>>7668192
I think there's a bigger problem here.
The people that browse 4chan just can't be happy for each other. Just cause someone likes something that you don't doesn't mean you can sit there and shitpost all over their dreams. It's not about whether you're an engineer or a pure maths guy, it's about how insecure all of us fuckers are.
>>
>>7668962

Oh shit I used the wrong word. I didn't mean 'ephemeral', I meant something more like 'abstract' or 'conceptual'.

Essentially. You would have to be completely 100% delusional to convince yourself you had made a plane, a rocket, a tool, or a computer if you hadn't. It can be quite easy to convince yourself you are somehow approaching some novel concept or idea.
>>
>>7668192
Probably bitter that engineers enjoy better pay and employment prospects.
>>
>>7668240
