OP here. You sir are an idiot. I am German and I can ensure you that ß is still common in the german language. To write e.g. "Fuss" instead of "Fuß" is just false and would lead to irritations for the reader. Only if special characters would lead to problems it is usual to write "ss"instead of "ß". Such is the case by writing emails to an non german or at an ATM but it's the exception.
Just because you're language doesn't have any special characters doesn't mean they're outdated.

You're second statement is bullshit too. It still is "das Mädchen", see
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/M%C3%A4dchen

"Die Mädchen" would be plural. There's no german in the world how would say "Die Mädchen holt sich ein Eis." It sounds completly wrong and it is also completly wrong.
I don't know where you have you're information from, but it's completly bullshit just as you.
Sincerly,
angry German

Also, since you are a native German, you can't truly provide insight on why certain words are certain genders. Mädchen ist ein Neutrum, weil es eine Verkleinerungsform ist. Man könnte auch behaupten, dass Mädchen so ist, denn es beschreibt ein Kind.

>>7233126
Eszetts are not outdated. Go to a German news website and you will see them everywhere. Also, for nouns relating to people in German, word gender often corresponds with actual gender. However, for diminutives (English examples: booklet = small book, miniwindow = small window), German uses a neuter gender. Some extra German examples: das Rotkäppchen = the little red riding hood, das Männchen = little man.

I don't think anyone is eligible to officially change anyones name to something else.
You might spell it "Gauss" because it's easier to write if you don't know the "ß". Still you can't officially change a name.
Still I agree that we shouldn't be nitpicky if someone on the internet doesn't spell it correctly, because they might not have a keyboard with the "ß".
The same way, I can't write a chinese name the correct way without putting a lot effort into it.

On a similar note, in my opinion it seems very respectless how some peoples names are pronounced in other countires. Often nobody puts effort into learning the correct pronunciation.
For example "Goethe" is not pronounced "go ithi", it's "Göte". Or "de Broglie" is pronounced like "de Brai".

Look up the names and origins of most famous scientists who fled the Nazi during WW2. Then see how long it takes you to find one that is German and doesn't belong to one of those four categories.

Protip before you start: Von Neumann was Hungarian, Schrödinger and Gödel were Austrian (though also Czeh at some point for Gödel), Pauli had a Jewish father (which is enough to make him Jewish to the eyes of mister masterrace above).

I study in Göttingen at the university where Gauß was professor. Did you know that after his dead his brain was extracted and preserved in a jar so that they could study why he was so smart.
Not long ago, they discovered that it wasn't Gauß's brain all along. Someone mixed it up with another brain, heaven knows how long ago. All the time they examined the wrong brain.

>>

1. He died 1855, at this time science worked a bit different.
2. You often extract the brain of brilliant people, like Einstein's brain, so it's not really a N=1 study.

Not noticing that there's something off about a brain for years is not something you get in studies with a reasonable N, given that you have a bunch of legitimate genius brains to compare it to. Two separate N = 1 studies are stull just two separate N = 1 studies. (Note that N is not additive: you don't analyze and draw conclusions for each datapoint separately)
