Perhaps most damning thing in this memo is a note about "the possibility of establishing a declared or undeclared Salafist principality" (i.e. an Islamic State) in eastern Syria, and that this is "exactly what the supporting powers [meaning Turkey, the Gulf States, and the West] want", because it would halt Shia expansion in Iraq and Iran.
Now you might be thinking to yourself - why exactly do we want to halt the Shia, again? You might be thinking it's because the Shia are opposed to the Sunni regimes of the Gulf States, such as Saudi Arabia, who have traditionally been our major petroleum trading partner.

Which opens by saying:
"The best way to help Israel deal with Iran's growing nuclear capability is to help the people of Syria overthrow the regime of Bashar Assad."
The email goes on to explain that Syria's presence exacerbates the threat of Iranian nukes and Iranian-trained terrorists (such as Hezbollah) to Israeli security, and that the overthrow of the Syrian regime would be a boon to Israeli security.
The most frightening thing? This email was written on December 31st, 2000 - before the September 11 terrorist attacks that would be used as an excuse to take us into Shia Iraq and destabilize the region.
The wars in the Middle East have never been about oil. They've always been about the security of Israel. And countries like Saudi Arabia parasitically benefit from the conflict, fueling the opposition in Syria so that they can strike at their hated rivals, the Shia of Iran, and spread their virulent salafi Wahhabist beliefs into new territory.
