Now most people think Waluigi is just ``Wa'' placed in front of Luigi because he's Wario's buddy. But they're wrong. Waluigi is an even more intricate pun, Warui + Luigi = Waluigi.
Warui means bad or inferior, unwell etc. It's not just `evil' Mario, it's knock-off Mario, poor man's Mario, sick Mario etc. He's Mario but not. I also knwo the game was intended for girls (like me!) at first because the creator wanted to widen the video game industry which at the time, was just begging and was only men.
Unfortunately it stayed men, but that is where the concept of eating came from... he thought girls (like me!) would want to play a video game themed on food and was also cute enemies and not scary ones like the other games :O
