C is an outdated piece of shit whose design decisions don't work for most scenarios in 2015. Please don't learn it with the intention of using it as your main language. Literally any other popular language is better.

What are your thoughts on C++? Is it any better?

Slightly better, but it only started adding new things very recently (2011 I think) so it's worse than it could be. And worst of all, it still has a lot of dumb decisions based on C since it has to be compatible.
C# is probably the best choice since Microsoft has open sourced it and it should work on Linux. Python is OK for most things too.
