I for one, am extremely ok with it. Maybe the shying away from nipples is a bit excessive, you can maintain the same feel they're going for AND show a naked nipple.
It actually feels modern and contemporary and relevant, as much as a magazine can feel now, and if it keeps up it should chip away at the "crusty old magazine for old farts" reputation is has now.
In the meantime, imma dump some of my favourite from the 50s up to mid 80s
I really like the art direction. I think Esquire's Me In My Place series beats everything anyone's doing right now to the point that I think Playboy should consider adopting some of that style.

playboy is weak now. Overly artistic/pretentious bullshit, like I'm scrolling through Instagram. The same day I got PB in the mail, I got a victoria's secret catalog that was better too look at. Shit this latest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit was far and away more enjoyable than playboy.
