Because they had to take up the jobs men left behind so the men could go to war. The women enjoyed work since the only thing they would expect to do with their lives is to marry and have kids and be a house wife. When men came back from war they saw that women comprised most of American workforce and todl them to fuck off and go home. Women said no, and that's what spawned subsequent waves of Feminism.
