Nah, they're okay if you just get an older one and turn off the NSA tracking device. I basically use it to text my mom to let her know I'm not dead yet (she calls the police to file a missing person report if I don't send her a message at least every other day because she's nuts), take pictures of any cool bugs or animals I find, as a calculator and as a mobile atlas. I don't turn on geolocation so I just manually find myself on google maps. Sometimes I just go off and wander into the wilderness for a few weeks so the older, bulkier models are nice since they tend to have better battery life. With a few extra charge packs and turning it off when not in use I can keep it going for 2 weeks.
