The hell we are. We as a species have never hit true overpopulated measures. Most that bullshit was propaganda from the 70's onward out of a knee jerk reaction both to China's over population (which had to do with sudden loses of fertile land) and the spike in consumerism that freak out many US organizations. Only two countries have any issue with birth rates and both are not first world (yet) a lot of what leads to the negative birth rates is the technology we have now that our ancestors did not.
