Start by putting in a garden or contributing to a community garden. This will let you know how much work it takes to grow food and if you'd even like to do it.

You could probably do both but you'd need to start out in an area where there is actually iron.

Veggies are pretty easy to grow, just have to water and keep critters out the rest happens on it's own.

I didn't imply you could, why did you assume I thought that? The closest place to me that would be a source of iron is Lake Superior, taconite is mined there, but it's a fairly low iron content ore, and used to be considered a useless waste product until after WWII, when the US iron mines had become more depleted, and processing it became more practical. I also don't mean I need tone able to just dig strait down and find some sort of magic iron deposit, I'm just very interested in the finding and processing of Iron into steel, since it's an extremely important resource throughout the world. I really just want to go live in an area where I can somehow get access to iron, and go about archaic processing and working methods as a sort of hobby.

That's one of the things, modern politics is trending towards reliance on the government and socialism. I personally feel that it's all to often ignored that taxes are literally a form of extortionism. I don't understand how it's justifiable for group of people to wage war and engage stupid industrial projects I don't want and that actually destroy nature I'd wish to preserve, along with civilians usually being the victims of they end being dragged into the conflict, and I should be expected to pay for it, and for all the bureaucrats to write it, and for the police to enforce it. People today think of the government as some kind of necessity, that even though the government is just a group of people itself, someone everyone assumes they can't do any of it on their own.

Bitch, you have any idea how involved a process any kind of metalwork is? Literally takes a town of highly skilled and trained workers, if you're talking everything from extraction to actual smelting.

Set up a veggie garden, that'll give you plenty to occupy your time, and is comparatively easy.
