I think the main problem holding us back is actually depression. I agree though that the medical approach to managing depression is risky at best. Lately I've been trying to just let myself vent my sadness at certain times, and other times convince myself to give things a try. Staying in bed all day isn't going to do me any favors.

Another thing I forgot to mention is "depressurizing" social situations. Like instead of letting my hair get really shaggy, I'll actually get a haircut now. And if there's a qt hairdresser, I'll no longer obsess over how to act around her, try to impress her and go full autismo ,and instead I'll just focus on getting my hair cut how I like it and making the necessary small talk. Basically, I accept that nothing good or bad can come from certain interactions and just go through with them. This has really helped me get through daily tasks when I'm not feeling well.
If you have depression for a cause, meds actually help a lot. Also, you don't take them forever. Treatment lasts a year.
If you have dysthymia, meds don't help much but exercise plus eating healthy helps a lot. Sometimes evem more than meds.
