The gameplay, ironically enough, is outside of the game. It's just about exploring in your community and finding neat little things, as well as banding together with friends to try to keep possession of local gyms. The app itself is just a facilitator.
I've found a bunch of little fountains and statues that I've driven by shitloads of times but only recently stopped and looked because they were Pokestops.
The facts that the game is grounded in (a) leaving one's house and (b) facilitating a minimal amount of social interaction make it a no-brainer that depressed, angsty robots will of course hate it with a passion.

You can already see it at some gyms. People have pokemon with almost 3k combat power and that's not possible this early without spending real money
