This server has a new world, and now everything doesn't look autistic, such as the giant bedrock wall, that's gone now. Here's an overview of the map (pic related).
A few rules include no attention whore fembots, no griefing, no spamming and no raiding. This server serves the purpose of being a comfy experience.

Not 1.9+
The map is loosely based on the real world, so not everything is geographically accurate. Such as me putting India on Africa, Australia in the middle of the ocean, and Asia being thinner, and Britian being larger. Here is what the map looks like in-game.
mfw map is basically Europe + Africa, but no Shitaly.

It's not 1.9+ because the server is absolute autism to install with those versions, and the additions in 1.9 are also autism. The only thing people don't like about this server being 1.8 is that they have to create a new version in their launcher to join.
can i play this with my legit version of mc or would i have to pirate 1.8?

Yes, you can. At the bottom left of your launcher, there should be buttons that say "profile".
You can create a new profile, but this doesn't mean that you have to buy the game again, it just means you can use different versions with more dedicated RAM and technical stuff.
So you can not only make it 1.8 to join, but edit other things it allows you to do.

Are you me? I'm on vacation and I would love to play on this server but my desktop is at home sadly. I will too play this server once I get home, I've saved all the info OP posted on notepad. Nice server btw OP!
As someone who frequently uses world painter, this map is fucking terrible.
Is anyone interested in a decent custom map? I could definitely whip one up that isn't as messy as this.

I connected and played earlier. I dont know why but when I tried to play on it using 1.8 it told me the server version was 1.7.10 and so I used that and it worked, but after a while it disconnected me.
