Reminder that the reason that the USSR invaded Afghanistan in the first place was because the CIA was funding extremist Muslim groups and was feeding information to the USSR that these groups were going to overthrow the Afghan government in favor of a pro-western government.

Also Bin-Laden was a joke among the Mujaheddin. He was seen as some rich playboy come from Arabia to play Jihadi. Ahmad Shah Massoud was the real hero.
After the war the CIA repurchased all the vaunted stinger missiles that were unused. Massoud was one of the most successful commanders at fighting the Soviets, he returned every missile sent to him.
