I remember a time when /b/ was completely engulfed in spam of a topless girl with pierced wits with overlay text "GO TO [spam URL]." The whole site went offline for a few hours, then moot implementeid captcha, which was originally only intended to be temporary.
Also remember another time when every thread on /b/ was deleted except a (user was banned for this post) camwhore fag which got over 4000 replies, then /b/ was empty, no threads, you couldn't make one, was like that for at least an hour

It was all really cool. I dont really browse r9k anymore because all the good actual discussion stopped, then all the shitposting even stopped being good. I lurked /fa/ for a while, and fucked around with the rivalry between them and /fit/. Moved over to /x/, then when that board stopped being interesting and fell into the miserable state its in now I'm on /tv/. The memes and shitposting over there are great, but theres a TON of bullshit to wade through. I really have noticed 4chan on the decline, and newfags have been making me sick. I just go on /r9k/ to be a bitter oldfag every once in a while. Fuck I was there when costanza posting happened, and got to watch it turn into "shiggity wiggity". lots of other great memes too, thats not even when I started coming on here, i just really liked that meme

Tbh the thing I think really fucked 4chan was not (at least 100%) the newfags.
What killed 4chan was the commodification and mainstreaming of memes.
I remember when I started browsing /b/ it was literally like everyone spoke a different fucking language. I had absolutely no idea what anyone was saying. I remember being really excited when I figured out what mfw stood for.
The point is that there was no way at all to get what the fuck was going on without putting in at least a month of lurking. No normies could bear to stay for that long, so it effectively filtered all of them out.
Even as time went by and normies came anyway because of chanology etc.. the "cooling off" period of lurking before being able to post anything without being relentlessly called a newfag made people understand what the difference was between a shitpost and something that someone might actually want to read.
This sort of built-in quality control is meaningless when any meme can be traced to its origins on fucking know your meme. New 4chan has no sense of community because the newcomers feel as if they understand it before they come here. When they arrived in such great numbers, they transformed 4chan from the glorious piece of shit it was into their version of it: the bland piece of shit they have now.
I was really happy I saw this thread. I basically never lurk here anymore and split my time between various other chans (7,8, and 420 mostly) but coming back and spewing all this bullshit has given me time to reflect on my history here and also on all the time I (mis)spent here once upon a time.
