I went to HS when the goth thing was giving way to the punk and emo things. I liked all three.
One of the big realizations I had was that these people often didn't have a lot going for them. I mean, you assume the person with purple hair and unusual outfits is going to be interesting, but many of them were really dull to talk to. The actual interesting people don't need all these surface displays of uniqueness to feel special.
